Radio ZID
Radio Zid (Wall) was established in the beginning of 1993 as a
non-profit media project primarily conceived as a mission of
cultural and spiritual restoration in the wartime Sarajevo and
Bosnia-Herzegovina. The spiritusmovens behind the project was:
democracy, tolerance, the civil society norms and standards, and
the activity aimed at the creation of modern public opinion. As
an urban radio, Zid was in war times engaged in the salvation
activity of Sarajevo as an urban environment. The station had its
articulated and autonomous political stance. It have never
followed orientation of any party, but a larger political concept
and philosophy of social life reflecting all the major social
issues concerning the town, the state and those of global
significance. Zid has not expressed any ideological standpoint,
but the standpoints of the "common sense", a rational
approach which is a constituent part of being urbane. Radio Zid
developed many special broadcast targeted at particular social
groups e. g. refugees, children, etc. Especially important is
programme for refugees which was created after Dayton Agreement.
The programme is done with the support of hCa, UNHCR and Soros
Foundation and is aimed to assist to people who would like to go
back to their homes with relevant information such as: legal
advises referring to citizenship, personal documents, property,
etc.; and information on current situation in places where they
would like to return to. Radio Zid has extended its activities
for these few years. At present, it is a publishing house editing
books and a cultural newspaper. Zid also has its video and CD
production. The station plans to start cable TV programme during
this year. The main projects for this year and the problems of
Radio Zid are the following:
1. As a typical urban radio station, Zid is targeting younger and
middle-age generations of educated people with urban cultural
patterns. Being like this in nowadays Sarajevo brings a lot of
difficulties. Lot of people, particularly belonging to this part
of population already left and still leaves the town. On the
other hand, lot of refugees from countryside areas came to the
town. It is expected that a considerable number of refugees who
are at present in West European counties and who will return to
the country will come to Sarajevo. Regarding Radio Zid, these
migrations will have as a consequence a decrease of the number of
its listeners Therefore, the station plans to create some new
broadcasts to find its audience and needs a support to do so.
2. Radio Zid is in a position to search for its "old"
audience all over the world. It plans to do it through its
internet edition. But, it is very difficult at the moment to do
it from Sarajevo. Because of that, providers are usually
somewhere in USA and West Europe, which is increasing the
finances for realisation of this project.
3. Zid would like to join the new-created network of radio
stations (see for Radio B92) and they would need financial
support for that project.
